Temporary Game Lines Tape
Coaches need a temporary game line from time to time. Exercises such as practice drills, group formation spacing, or phys. ed. exercises like four-square or pickleball require temporary tape. However, proceed with caution as most adhesives could lead to an expensive repair.
Many adhesive tapes can peel away your gym floor finish and expose the maple wood. If not remedied, the exposed area can lead to additional finish damage in adjacent areas. Additionally common tapes have resins that will seep into floor-finish and stain the underlying painted game lines and wood.
Safety is another reason for not using tape for temporary game markings. According to the Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association “most tapes used for temporary markings have a different coefficient of friction than finishes applied to the maple playing surface”. Thus, athlete safety is compromised as tape can affect a player’s ability to pivot or stop-and-go.
The Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association recommends against using the following adhesive tapes for temporary game lines:
- Masking Tape (Painter’s Blue Tape)
- Construction Tape
- Electrical Tape
- Duct Tape
The QHF Sports pros understand that adding additional permanent game markings may not make sense. Afterall one may only need the game lines temporarily for practice drills. But keep in mind, we repair gym floor finishes year-round from coaching staff using the wrong kind of tape. Be sure to contact QHF Sports if you are concerned about using temporary game line tape.
